DESCRIPTION: Often preserved as molds within a concretion as an elongated chamber with a depressed cross-section; some cases preserved with an antechamber, and/or multilayered lining. Inner surface texture composed of densely packed subrectangular to subtriangular pits; some scratch marks can be found on excellent preserved specimens. When preserved, sediment within the chamber is very fine- to fine- grained, while the exterior is medium-coarse sand.

BEHAVIOR(S): Reproduction, calichnia.

ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS: Continental, terrestrial; paleosol upper horizons.

POSSIBLE TRACEMAKERS: Likely pupation chamber of a moth (e.g., sphinx moth).

GEOLOGIC RANGE: Eocene to recent

REMARKS: The first trace fossil documented attributed to sphinx moths in paleosols. Could be produced by other moths (Lepidoptera).
