Paleobuprestis Walker, 1938


DESCRIPTION: Small (2–10 mm) tunnels in wood under the bark. Generally straight to slightly sinuous and do not intersect. Occur as a few to highly concentrated.

BEHAVIOR(S): Reproduction, calichnia.

ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS: Wood in terrestrial environments.

POSSIBLE TRACEMAKERS: Buprestid beetle larvae (Coleoptera)

GEOLOGIC RANGE: Carboniferous to recent

REMARKS: Borings in the heartwood of trees. Modern borings found in trees in decline (dying and decaying), where the female lays eggs in the crevasses of the bark. Eggs hatch and the larvae bore into the tree.
